Costa Rican banks implement ESG standards and digital expansion
Costa Rica’s major financial institutions are implementing strategic shifts toward sustainability and digital accessibility. Banco Nacional (BN) is transitioning its business model to incorporate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards into its daily operations and product portfolios. As a state-owned entity, BN operates under the oversight of SUGEF to ensure regulatory compliance and national financial stability.
Simultaneously, Banco de Costa Rica (BCR) is expanding financial services through its Puntos Tucán network. In 2025, this network of 3,530 active commercial points processed 8.4 million transactions, amounting to 409 billion colones. The BCR also reported significant support for small and medium-sized enterprises, providing 82.88 billion colones in financing and microcredits. Additionally, the bank’s Puntos País facilitated 12.3 million state-related administrative procedures in the previous year.
