Costa Rica economic performance and trade trends

Overview

In the first seven months of 2026, Costa Rica’s goods exports grew by 5% to reach $13.821 billion, an increase of $683 million compared to the same period in 2025. Medical devices led the export sector with $6.399 billion in sales, followed by agriculture and the food industry. Growth was particularly strong in Asia, which saw a 31% increase in exports.

However, by July 2026, the nation’s economic growth experienced a deceleration. The year-on-year economic expansion reached 2.5%, a 3.2 percentage point decrease from the 5.7% growth recorded in July 2025. This slowdown was attributed to a cooldown in the country’s special regimes, though the average year-on-year growth for the economy through July remained at 3.6%.
