Global banana market faces rising costs and price adjustments

The global banana market is navigating significant shifts in pricing, production, and logistics. Fairtrade International has announced that its minimum prices for bananas will increase by 5.6% at the Ex Works level and 3.9% at the FOB level starting January 1, 2027. This adjustment responds to rising production costs, climate pressures such as El Niño, and geopolitical instability.

In Ecuador, the world's leading exporter, industry leaders are calling for fair pricing to ensure sustainable production and living wages for the 250,000 people employed in the sector. Meanwhile, in Colombia, the exporter Uniban is expanding its footprint into the Córdoba department with a 700-hectare project, aiming to boost regional productivity despite threats from the Fusarium R4T fungus.

Market conditions remain varied. Cameroon has seen a 21.5% rise in export volumes through September 2026, though major exporters like Plantations du Haut Penja face profitability challenges. In Europe, demand is fluctuating; while some regions see rising consumption, high logistics and production costs continue to pressure margins.
