Costa Rica's PLN faces internal tension after leadership elections

Internal tensions have surfaced within Costa Rica’s National Liberation Party (PLN) following the election of the National Superior Executive Committee. Former presidential candidate Álvaro Ramos departed the party's National Assembly on October 10 after the election of new committee members, sparking speculation regarding his potential resignation from the organization.

The friction follows the reelection of Miguel Guillén as General Secretary. While Ramos supported a specific slate of candidates—including newly elected Vice President Daniela Coll, President Óscar Izquierdo, and Sub-treasurer Rafael Vargas—he did not back Guillén, Eder Hernández, or Annie Saborío, all of whom will continue in their current roles for the 2022-2026 period.

Daniela Coll stated that there is space within the party for all former candidates and presidents, noting that the new Executive Committee intends to speak with Ramos to foster cooperation. Meanwhile, the PLN Secretary has called for political responsibility, urging that personal differences between leaders should not supersede the interests of Costa Rica.
