Ecuador prepares for November 2026 sectional elections
Ecuador's National Electoral Council (CNE) is advancing preparations for the sectional and Council for Public Participation and Social Control (CPCCS) elections scheduled for November 29, 2026. As of early August 2026, over 1,600 candidacies have been registered in the system. The registration period is set to close on August 17, 2026, at 18:00.
The CNE has confirmed the establishment of 4,492 polling stations to facilitate the vote, including 4,399 locations within Ecuador and 93 stations located abroad. These venues have been selected based on criteria of security, accessibility, and technological infrastructure. To mitigate risks from potential adverse weather or natural disasters, such as El Niño, the CNE has implemented contingency plans to relocate stations if necessary.
The upcoming elections will allow approximately 13.8 million citizens to elect more than 11,400 authorities, including prefects, mayors, urban and rural councilors, and members of rural parish boards. Additionally, the vote will determine members of the CPCCS, an influential body responsible for appointing various state control authorities.
