Brazil agribusiness: Sugarcane harvest grows while India authorizes sugar imports
Brazil's agribusiness sector is seeing significant shifts in production and trade. Conab estimates the 2026/27 sugarcane harvest will reach 705.2 million tons, a 4.7% increase, driven by expanded area and improved productivity. However, sugar production is expected to drop by 2.9% to 42.89 million tons as more raw material is diverted to ethanol, which is projected to hit a record 41.88 billion liters.
In the global market, India has authorized the duty-free import of up to 1 million tons of raw sugar to stabilize domestic prices amid monsoon concerns. This move is expected to influence international commodity prices.
On the trade front, Brazilian agricultural exports rose 10.4% in the second week of August compared to 2025, contributing to a yearly trade surplus of approximately R$ 270.87 billion. Meanwhile, cotton harvesting in Brazil has reached 59.6% of the total area, and Coasul Cooperativa Agroindustrial is investing R$ 43.6 million to expand grain storage capacity in Paraná.
