Court challenges Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu’s CHP leadership term

A legal challenge has been initiated regarding the leadership term of Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu within the Republican People's Party (CHP). Lawyer and former Supreme Court Prosecutor Ömer Faruk Eminağaoğlu filed a lawsuit against the Presidency of the Court of Cassation (Yargıtay Başkanlığı) after a previous application was rejected.

Eminağaoğlu argues that Kılıçdaroğlu’s term as chairman, which began at the 37th Ordinary Convention, expired on July 26, 2023, following the three-year limit for party leaders. The lawsuit seeks to have this expiration officially recorded in the political party registry held by the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

The Ankara 15th Administrative Court has completed its initial review and requested a defense from the Court of Cassation regarding the reasons for the initial rejection. If the court accepts the case and rules in favor of the plaintiff, it could legally establish that the chairmanship became vacant on July 26, 2023, potentially preventing Kılıçdaroğlu from exercising leadership duties even under provisional measures.
