Courts hear manslaughter cases in the UK and Australia

In separate legal proceedings, courts in the United Kingdom and Australia are addressing manslaughter cases involving defendants claiming mental health issues or self-defence.

At Liverpool Crown Court, Kayleigh Smart, 40, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Liam Collier, 34, on the grounds of diminished responsibility. The court heard that Smart, who has a diagnosis of schizophrenia, stabbed Mr. Collier 11 times in his Haydock flat. Prosecutors noted that Smart had stopped taking her medication and was abusing drugs and alcohol at the time of the killing. While her actions were deemed substantially impaired by mental disorder, the prosecution questioned her claim that the violence was necessary for self-defence.

In New South Wales, Australia, Nirmeen Noufl is awaiting sentencing for the manslaughter of her husband, Mamdouh. Noufl, 55, pleaded guilty to killing her husband in circumstances of excessive self-defence during an assault. Following the killing in May 2023, she dismembered his body and disposed of it in garbage bags across southwest Sydney. While her defense highlighted her fragility and remorse as a survivor of domestic violence, prosecutors questioned the timing and sincerity of her contrition.
