Taiwan launches new vaccine schedules and Health Coin program

Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare has announced several new healthcare initiatives and vaccination schedules effective October 1. Publicly funded influenza and COVID-19 vaccines will be administered in two phases. The first phase begins October 1, targeting high-risk groups including seniors over 65, indigenous people over 55, pregnant women, and certain medical personnel. The second phase starts November 2, opening to adults aged 50 to 64 without high-risk chronic conditions.

This year's influenza vaccines include new high-antigen versions prioritized for elderly residents in long-term care facilities. COVID-19 vaccinations will feature updated XFG vaccines, such as Moderna XFG, which are designed to have lower side effects.

A new “Health Coin” incentive program will launch on October 1, allowing citizens aged 18 and older to accumulate points for participating in preventive healthcare, such as cancer screenings and vaccinations. These coins can be redeemed for health-related goods and services starting December 1 through various retail and medical partners.

Additionally, the National Health Insurance program is expanding coverage for several major medications, including CAR-T cell therapy and certain immunotherapy drugs. The threshold for waiving interest on overdue National Pension insurance payments will also increase from 30 to 100 TWD.
