Taiwan public health and vaccination initiatives

Overview

Taiwan is expanding its public health initiatives through large-scale vaccine procurement and the introduction of digital incentive programs. The Centers for Disease Control announced a record procurement of over 7 million influenza vaccine doses, including 200,000 enhanced doses prioritized for seniors in long-term care. Additionally, 2.4 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been secured to address current virus trends.

To support these efforts, the ‘Health Coin’ policy, launched on October 1, allows adults aged 18 and older to accumulate points through vaccinations, various cancer screenings, hepatitis B and C screenings, and lifestyle assessments. The program aims to transition the national health focus from disease treatment to health promotion and prevention. Participants can accumulate coins through the ‘Health Wallet’ and ‘Health GO’ apps. Starting in December, coins can be redeemed for health-related products at pharmacies, gyms, hospitals, convenience stores, and supermarkets once a 1,000-coin threshold is met. One token is equivalent to one NTD and remains valid for two years.

In a related effort to promote physical activity, the Ministry of Sports introduced the ‘Sweat with Rewards’ campaign, allowing participants to earn weekly ‘Health Gift Vouchers’ for completing tasks like walking 8,000 steps a day.

As of mid-October, vaccination uptake has increased significantly. Influenza vaccinations reached approximately 2.26 million doses, a 16% increase over the previous year, while COVID-19 vaccinations surpassed 781,000 doses, a 50% increase. To expand options, the government is introducing the Novavax XFG COVID-19 vaccine for eligible individuals aged 12 and older starting October 19.
