Taiwan public health and vaccination initiatives

Overview

Taiwan is expanding its public health initiatives through large-scale vaccine procurement and the introduction of digital incentive programs. The Centers for Disease Control announced a record procurement of over 7 million influenza vaccine doses, including 200,000 enhanced doses prioritized for seniors in long-term care. Additionally, 2.4 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been secured to address current virus trends.

To support these efforts and promote preventive medicine, President Lai Ching-te announced the ‘Health Coin’ policy, set to launch in October. Minister of Health and Welfare Shi Chung-liang clarified that the initiative follows a ‘lifetime accumulation’ concept, with point accumulation beginning October 1 and redemption starting December 1. Adults aged 18 and older can earn points through vaccinations (influenza, COVID-19, and pneumococcal) and various screenings, including hepatitis B and C, as well as breast, oral, lung, colorectal, and cervical cancer screenings. Future expansions may include blood donation and participation in marathons.

Complementing these efforts, the Ministry of Sports has introduced the ‘Sweat with Rewards’ campaign to promote physical activity. Participants can earn weekly ‘Health Gift Vouchers’ worth 50 TWD by completing tasks such as walking 8,000 steps a day, exercising for 30 minutes, or running 5 kilometers. These rewards can be redeemed for goods at convenience stores and supermarkets, furthering the national shift toward preventive health and regular movement.
