COVID-19 Cases Slightly Rise in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula

During the week of 21 – 27 June 2026, Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula recorded three new COVID‑19 cases, all in the state of Quintana Roo. The total number of confirmed infections in the peninsula for the year reached six – four in Quintana Roo, two in Yucatán and none in Campeche – marking the largest weekly increase recorded in the first half of 2026.

The infections are linked to Omicron‑derived sub‑variants, which generally cause milder illness in fully vaccinated or previously infected individuals. Health authorities stress that older adults, people with chronic conditions, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems remain at higher risk of serious complications.

The rise coincides with the start of the summer holiday season, when travel and gatherings increase. Officials continue to advise basic preventive measures: stay home if symptomatic, wear a mask when coughing or sneezing, practice frequent hand hygiene, ensure good ventilation of indoor spaces and keep vaccination schedules up to date.
