COVID-19: Overview of SARS-CoV-2 symptoms and transmission

COVID-19 is a contagious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. The disease spread globally in January 2020, initiating a worldwide pandemic.

Symptoms vary and may include fever, fatigue, cough, breathing difficulties, and loss of taste or smell. Symptoms typically appear within one to fourteen days of exposure. Approximately one-third of infected individuals do not develop noticeable symptoms.

Among symptomatic patients, 81% experience mild to moderate symptoms, 14% experience severe symptoms such as hypoxia, and 5% develop critical symptoms including respiratory failure or shock. Older populations face a higher risk of severe illness. Some patients experience long-term effects known as long COVID, which can involve organ damage.

Transmission occurs through respiratory particles inhaled or via contact with eyes, nose, or mouth. Individuals can remain contagious for up to 20 days.
