Overview

COVID-19 is a contagious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that initiated a global pandemic in January 2020. Symptoms vary among individuals, ranging from no noticeable symptoms in approximately one-third of cases to mild, moderate, severe, or critical conditions such as respiratory failure and organ dysfunction.

Transmission occurs through the inhalation of respiratory particles or contact with contaminated surfaces and mucous membranes. Individuals may remain contagious for up to 20 days. Some patients experience long-term complications referred to as “long COVID,” which can involve organ damage and persist for months or years.
