Dominican and Chilean prison systems face violence and corruption

The prison systems in the Dominican Republic and Chile are facing significant instability due to violence, overcrowding, and corruption.

In the Dominican Republic, the Directorate General of Penitentiary and Correctional Services (DGSPC) has launched an intensified crackdown to dismantle corruption networks involving inmates, staff, and relatives. This follows reports of severe overcrowding, with approximately 25,200 inmates occupying facilities designed for 16,000 people. Recent incidents include escapes, riots, and the seizure of contraband such as drugs and mobile phones.

In Chile, multiple violent incidents have been reported within correctional facilities. In Coyhaique, a fight between inmates resulted in two deaths and four injuries, prompting investigations by the PDI and the Public Ministry. In Angol, an inmate was killed following a brutal attack involving multiple assailants. Additionally, in Coronel, a prison tutor was reportedly assaulted and blackmailed by a group of young inmates who demanded the smuggling of illicit substances into the facility.
