CPG brands adapt digital strategies for AI answer engines

As consumers increasingly utilize AI-powered answer engines such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity for product research, consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands are adapting their digital strategies to ensure visibility in AI-generated responses.

A Forrester review of 24 CPG brands identified five leaders currently succeeding with answer engines: Purina, which earned a top score through its extensive library of pet-care content; Similac, noted for strong visibility across search and answer engines; CLIF Bar, which benefits from a strong direct-to-consumer experience; Coca-Cola, which maintains a high digital footprint through brand recognition; and McCormick, which utilizes rich product content to aid online discovery.

To become ‘answer-engine ready,’ ecommerce product pages must evolve beyond traditional SEO factors like pricing and imagery. Modern pages must provide structured, trustworthy, and specific information that allows AI systems to synthesize context. This enables engines to confidently recommend products when users submit complex, question-led prompts regarding specific needs or comparisons.
