CPI challenges CPM over Opposition deputy leader appointment

Tensions have escalated within the Left Democratic Front (LDF) alliance in Kerala as the Communist Party of India (CPI) challenges the Communist Party of India (Marxist) over the appointment of the Opposition deputy leader.

CPI state assistant secretary Sathyan Mokeri criticized Pinarayi Vijayan, stating that his unilateral approach to the appointment violates alliance conventions and undermines collective decision-making. The CPI, the second-largest constituent of the LDF, argues that decisions affecting the alliance should be reached through discussion rather than individual determination.

The CPM has maintained its position, with leaders suggesting that Vijayan’s remarks merely reiterate the party's stance. This disagreement has placed the CPI in a difficult political position, forcing the party to choose between conceding to the CPM or engaging in a prolonged confrontation that could impact Left unity at a national level. The CPI has already signaled its dissent by refusing to attend a parliamentary party meeting.
