CPI (M) opposes electoral roll revisions in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has called for a suspension of the electoral roll revision process for Panchayat and Municipal Council elections in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The party is requesting that the process remain pending until the Supreme Court examines the legality of the appointment of Election Commissioners of India, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), and the revised Form 6.
In a letter to the Election Commissioner for Union Territories, D. Ayyappan, the CPI (M) Andaman & Nicobar State Organising Committee noted that local elections were last held in March 2022. The party argued that these elections must follow the A&N Islands (Panchayats) (Preparation of Electoral Rolls and Conduct of Elections) Rules, 1995.
The CPI (M) highlighted concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision conducted for the Parliamentary Constituency during 2025-26, stating that 64,014 electors, including 9,191 recorded deaths, were excluded from the rolls following the revision.
