CPM and CPI clash over Kerala Opposition Deputy Leader post

A political dispute between the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) and its ally, the Communist Party of India (CPI), has escalated within the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala. The confrontation centers on the appointment of the Opposition Deputy Leader in the Kerala Assembly.

CPM leaders have publicly criticized the CPI, with state secretariat member N Mohanan questioning the party’s political influence and accusing it of using pressure tactics. CPM officials have also suggested that the CPI’s internal opposition to government schemes, such as the PM SHRI education initiative, contributed to recent electoral setbacks.

In response to the CPM’s refusal to concede the deputy leader post and the subsequent public criticism, the CPI is preparing a formal response. CPI state leadership plans to hold an extraordinary meeting with national leaders in New Delhi on September 1 to determine whether to pursue a sustained political confrontation. The CPI has accused former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of an authoritarian approach, while the CPM maintains that yielding the post would grant the junior ally an undue level of influence within the coalition.
