Crans-Montana fire spurs Italian safety reforms and diplomatic appeals

Italian authorities in Varese organised a multi‑agency conference to strengthen fire‑safety rules for public venues after the New Year’s 2026 bar fire in Crans‑Montana that killed six Italian teenagers. The prefect of Varese, Salvatore Pasquariello, stressed the need to prevent overcrowding and to involve municipalities, fire services, commerce chambers and schools in ongoing inspections and a new operating protocol.

Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado concluded his Swiss posting by recalling the tragedy, urging that the two remaining bars in Crans‑Montana remain closed until the three‑year investigation is finished, and supporting a petition signed by families of the victims. He called on local mayors to consider the reputational impact on the canton and to respect the families’ demand for justice.
