Crans-Montana fire case: prosecutor resignation
Overview
The New Year’s Eve fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans‑Montana on 1 January 2026 killed 41 people and injured 115 after champagne bottles fitted with sparklers ignited acoustic‑foam insulation. Co‑owners Jacques and Jessica Moretti remain on supervised release and face charges of negligent homicide, serious bodily injury and negligent arson; Jessica is also under investigation for alleged document forgery following a June 5 interrogation.
Valais Council President Christophe Darbellay confirmed the former bar will be redeveloped as a youth centre and a physical memorial, with design input from victims’ families and a commemorative ceremony planned for 1 January 2027. Nationwide fire‑safety reforms have been introduced.
Swiss courts are still considering a request to reopen the Morettis’ other restaurants, Senso and Le Vieux‑Chalet, under a third‑party lease. A Change.org petition with more than 27,000 signatures urges authorities to keep those venues closed, arguing reopening could shield assets from the victims’ compensation pool; the proprietors report ongoing death threats.
In July 2026 prosecutors added a 15th suspect, former Chermignon mayor Jean‑Claude Savoy, who chaired the municipality’s fire commission in 2015. Further interrogations are scheduled for mid‑July, including the new suspect and the former safety officer of Chermignon’s Energypolis campus.
A further development: one of the three magistrates leading the criminal investigation will resign effective 31 December 2026, citing a new professional opportunity. The resignation was announced in a brief letter to victims’ families’ lawyers; no link to the case was given. The investigation will continue under the deputy chief prosecutor and the remaining magistrate, while it remains unclear whether a third prosecutor will be appointed. Two suspect hearings are slated for next week.
All assets remain seized pending the homicide and arson investigation, and victim compensation is expected to take up to fifteen years.
