Córdoba considers law for joint human and pet burials

A legislative project has been introduced in Córdoba, Argentina, to authorize the joint burial of humans and their pets in local cemeteries. The proposal, championed by Deputy Oscar Agost Carreño, aims to recognize the evolving bond between humans and domestic animals.

Under the proposed law, municipalities would have the discretion to offer this service following strict sanitary protocols. The measure would apply exclusively to small species, such as dogs and cats, while explicitly excluding large animals. To ensure public health safety, a veterinarian must issue a death certificate after evaluating the animal to rule out infectious diseases. The provincial government would be responsible for drafting environmental protocols to regulate these operations.

In addition to the burial proposal, Deputy Carreño has called upon the National Congress to increase penalties for animal cruelty by updating the Sarmiento Law and has proposed measures to close illegal breeding facilities.
