Animal welfare and regulation legislation in Córdoba

Legislative activity regarding animal welfare and regulation has emerged in Córdoba, Argentina. Initially, a proposal was introduced by Deputy Oscar Agost Carreño to authorize the joint burial of humans and small pets, such as dogs and cats, in local cemeteries, provided strict sanitary protocols and veterinary certifications are met.

Following a series of fatal attacks, including the death of a two-year-old child, legislative focus has intensified toward the regulation of potentially dangerous dog breeds. In the provincial legislature, Dante Rossi has proposed a project seeking a progressive ban on the commercialization and reproduction of specific breeds. This proposal allows existing pets to remain with owners for their natural lives, provided they adhere to requirements such as microchipping, mandatory sterilization, civil liability insurance, and regular inspections.

In Córdoba city, Councilwoman Fabiana Gutiérrez and Jessica Rovetto Yapur have presented projects to tighten municipal regulations. Gutiérrez’s proposal includes a total ban on the acquisition of new specimens and heavy fines for violators, alongside requests for increased inspections by BioCórdoba. These efforts follow public calls from medical professionals for more robust safety laws.
