El Niño triggers emergency responses across South America

Various South American nations are implementing emergency measures and monitoring systems in response to the El Niño phenomenon.

In Peru, authorities have issued high-level warnings regarding potential natural disasters. Cenepred has identified 520 districts in the highlands at risk of huaicos, while Indeci warned that 132 districts in the jungle face landslide risks. To bolster preparedness, the government has authorized 45 interventions totaling 118 million soles, including projects to manage the Piura River. Additionally, Agro Rural is investing 29.3 million soles to protect 791 hectares of crops in the Lima region. A national multi-hazard drill is scheduled for October 13 to test emergency response capabilities.

In Argentina, the Government of Córdoba has established an interdisciplinary council of experts to monitor climate trends and assess impacts on the central region. Other provinces, including Mendoza, are discussing long-term water management plans, while local municipalities in Gualeguaychú and Colón are reinforcing drainage maintenance and civil defense coordination.

In Colombia, Ideam has confirmed the phenomenon and warned it could persist through June 2027. Meanwhile, in Paraguay, the government has launched a preventive communication campaign to inform the public about severe weather risks.
