Córdoba legislators propose ban on dangerous dog breeds

Following a series of fatal attacks on children in Córdoba, Argentina, legislative initiatives have been introduced to restrict the breeding, sale, and ownership of potentially dangerous dog breeds.

In the provincial legislature, a project proposed by Dante Rossi seeks a progressive ban on the commercialization and reproduction of specific breeds to prevent future proliferation. Under this proposal, existing pets would be allowed to remain with their owners for their natural lives, provided they meet strict requirements including microchipping, mandatory sterilization, civil liability insurance, and regular inspections.

In the city of Córdoba, council members Fabiana Gutiérrez and Jessica Rovetto Yapur have also presented projects to tighten municipal regulations. Gutiérrez’s proposal includes a total ban on the acquisition of new specimens and heavy fines for violators, alongside requests for increased inspections by BioCórdoba. These legislative efforts follow the death of a two-year-old child and several other attacks, prompting medical professionals to join the public call for more robust safety laws.
