Córdoba, Mexico expands water network, tariffs rise, leaks persist

On 6 August 2026, the municipal government of Córdoba, Veracruz, together with Hidrosistema de Córdoba, inaugurated an expansion of the water‑supply network in the community of San José de Tapia. The project installed about 1,480 metres of high‑density polyethylene pipe, linking the colony 20 de Noviembre to San José de Tapia and improving access to potable water for residents who previously relied on a failing well.

At the same time, Hidrosistema has faced criticism for a persistent water leak near the Guillermo A. Sherwell Primary School and for a 4.53 % tariff increase that took effect on 1 August. The utility’s commercial sub‑director Nancy Esther Pulido Prado said the hike is needed to cover higher operating costs, but residents report irregular supply, shortages and inadequate maintenance of the aging network.
