Cremona prison inmate in critical condition after self-immolation

An inmate at the Cà del Ferro prison in Cremona set himself on fire on July 30. Following the incident, the individual was transferred to Niguarda Hospital in Milan, where he remains in critical condition due to severe burns.

Prosecutor Giannangelo Maria Fagnani has opened an investigation into the circumstances of the event. Reports indicate the inmate had previously been involved in maintenance work within the prison facility after being transferred from Busto Arsizio.

The Autonomous Union of Prison Police (SAPPE) has used the incident to highlight systemic issues within the Italian penitentiary system, citing overcrowding, staffing shortages, and inadequate psychological and medical resources as factors that exacerbate mental health crises among detainees.
