Investigation into death of Cremona prison inmate
Overview
On July 30, 39-year-old Moroccan inmate Salaheddine Nekhli suffered severe burns during an incident at the Cà del Ferro prison in Cremona. Following eleven days of hospitalization at Niguarda Hospital in Milan, Nekhli died from third-degree burns covering approximately 80% of his body and respiratory failure.
While the Autonomous Union of Prison Police (SAPPE) suggested the inmate set himself on fire, Nekhli’s family and his defense attorney, Giovanni Pignataro, have expressed strong skepticism. His sister, Fatima Nekhli, stated her brother was in good spirits and had made plans to settle in Cremona following his scheduled release in mid-August. The family also alleged that prison authorities provided three conflicting explanations on the day of the incident: a fire, a brawl, and a dispute with another inmate.
Prosecutor Giannangelo Maria Fagnani has opened an investigation into the circumstances of the death. The incident has highlighted systemic issues within the Italian penitentiary system, including overcrowding at the Cremona facility, which houses over 610 inmates despite a regulatory capacity of 384, as well as staffing shortages and inadequate medical and psychological resources.
