Crete-Attica interconnection named Strategic Project of the Year 2025

The Crete-Attica electrical interconnection has been named ‘Strategic Project of the Year 2025’ at the 9th Infrastructure and Transport Conference (ITC 2026). The project was implemented by ADMIE through its subsidiary, Ariadne Interconnection, with support from the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

This high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system features two submarine cables totaling 335 km with a capacity of 1,000 MW. Laid at depths of up to 1,200 meters in the Aegean Sea, it is one of the deepest and most powerful island interconnections globally. The project involved major contractors including Prysmian, Nexans, NKT-Hellenic Cables, and Siemens-Terna.

Since beginning power transfers in May 2025, the interconnection has ended the energy isolation of Crete, enhancing the stability and reliability of the Greek national grid. The shift away from local oil-based power units is estimated to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 1.5 million tons annually and could result in savings of up to 5 billion euros by 2035.
