Crete-Attica electrical interconnection recognition

Overview

The Crete-Attica electrical interconnection was named ‘Strategic Project of the Year 2025’ at the 9th Infrastructure and Transport Conference (ITC 2026).

Implemented by ADMIE through its subsidiary, Ariadne Interconnection, with support from the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system utilizes two submarine cables totaling 335 km with a 1,000 MW capacity. The cables were laid at depths reaching 1,200 meters in the Aegean Sea, making it one of the deepest and most powerful island interconnections globally. Major contractors involved in the project included Prysmian, Nexans, NKT-Hellenic Cables, and Siemens-Terna.

Following the commencement of power transfers in May 2025, the project has ended the energy isolation of Crete and improved the stability of the Greek national grid. The transition from local oil-based power is estimated to reduce annual CO2 emissions by approximately 1.5 million tons and could generate savings of up to 5 billion euros by 2035.
