Crete extends preventive measures for sheep and goat scrapie

The Regional Authority of Crete has announced that the emergency bio‑security measures aimed at preventing the spread of scrapie in sheep and goats will remain in force from Friday 10 July 2026 until Thursday 23 July 2026, after which they will be reassessed.

Key provisions include: intra‑regional animal movements for slaughter are allowed across the island, while breeding movements are restricted to the same regional unit; winter grazing changes are permitted within Crete; simultaneous transport of animals from different farms is prohibited; all movements must be accompanied by health certificates and use disinfected vehicles; receiving farms must be cleaned, disinfected and quarantine animals for 21 days; entry of sheep and goats from mainland Greece into Crete remains banned. Farm owners must also enforce strict on‑site bio‑security such as perimeter fencing, disinfection mats, limited visitor access, separate clothing for staff, regular pest control, and daily reporting of any suspect cases to veterinary services. Slaughterhouses, dairies and feed transport operators are required to follow enhanced sanitation and documentation procedures.
