Scrapie outbreaks and control in southeastern Europe

Overview

In early July 2026, Crete’s regional authority prolonged its emergency bio-security regime to prevent scrapie spread among sheep and goats, maintaining animal-movement restrictions, mainland-Greece entry bans and strict on-farm sanitation through late July. On 9 July the authority announced the measures would remain in force until 23 July, allowing intra-regional slaughter movements, restricting breeding moves to the same regional unit, prohibiting mixed-farm transports, and requiring health certificates, disinfected vehicles and a 21-day quarantine for receiving farms. Farm-level bio-security such as perimeter fencing, disinfection mats and daily reporting was reinforced. On 16 July Macedonian officials confirmed ten additional scrapie outbreaks in the villages of Sasa, Skolarci, Bigla, Malino, Kosevica and Sopot, bringing the total to 17 farms and more than 2,700 infected sheep and goats. The Agency for Food and Veterinary has culled over 1,400 animals and will continue depopulation once burial sites are approved. Movement of livestock remains limited to approved cases and strict disinfection, protective clothing and record-keeping are enforced. Vaccination is being evaluated. On 6 August Crete extended the preventive regime again, now covering 7–20 August. No cases have been detected on the island, but a rise in mainland infections prompted the continuation. Slaughter-related transport is allowed only within Crete, breeding moves stay within the same unit, and transfers to summer pastures require cleaned premises and a 30-day quarantine. Entry of sheep and goats from other Greek regions remains prohibited, and enhanced bio-security applies to slaughterhouses, dairies, feed transporters and veterinarians. On 20 August, the Region of Crete extended these preventive measures again, effective from 21 August until 3 September 2026. The extension aims to safeguard the island’s animal capital, noting the virus can survive in the environment for up to six months.
