Crete extends sheep‑goat plague preventive measures until Aug 20

The Regional Authority of Crete announced that preventive measures to protect livestock from the sheep‑goat plague will remain in force from 7 August to 20 August 2026. Although no cases have been detected on the island, a rise in infections on mainland Greece prompted the extension.

Movement of sheep and goats is now limited to within Crete: slaughter‑related transport is allowed only inside the region with strict bio‑security protocols; breeding movements are confined to the same regional unit; transfers to summer pastures may occur across units provided the destination is cleaned, disinfected and the animals are quarantined for 30 days. All transports must carry health certificates, use disinfected vehicles, and be accompanied by cleanliness certificates for the vehicles. Entry of sheep and goats from other parts of Greece remains prohibited. Additional bio‑security requirements apply to slaughterhouses, dairies, feed transporters and private veterinarians to prevent introduction and spread of the disease.
