Crete flooding traps eight in Samaria Gorge and causes massive damage

Severe flooding and torrential rainfall have caused extensive damage across Crete, leading to large-scale rescue operations and significant agricultural losses. In Samaria Gorge, eight people remain trapped as rising water levels and dangerous conditions prevent emergency services from reaching them.

In the Lasithi Plateau, flooding has buried massive quantities of potato crops and other vegetables under water and mud. The village of Anogeia has been flooded, and roads in Zoniana have become impassable. Rainfall levels have reached extreme heights, with Xyloskalo in Chania recording 420 mm of rain.

A high-level Greek government delegation, including the Ministers of Infrastructure and Transport and Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, is traveling to the island to assess the destruction and coordinate recovery efforts. Civil Protection and the Army are conducting ongoing operations to assist residents and secure affected areas.
