Flooding and extreme rainfall in Crete

Overview

Severe flooding and torrential rainfall across Crete have caused extensive damage and life-threatening conditions. In the Samaria Gorge, eight people were reported trapped as rising water levels hindered rescue efforts. The flooding also impacted the Lasithi Plateau, where agricultural areas were buried under mud and water, and the village of Anogeia was inundated.

Satellite imagery analysis indicates that approximately 2–2.5 km² of the Lasithi Plateau—representing roughly 8–10% of its flat agricultural area—was submerged. Additionally, the Aposelemi reservoir experienced a 15–20% increase in its water surface area due to heavy inflows.

In response, the Greek government dispatched high-level ministers to coordinate recovery, while the Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated to map the extent of the flooding.
