Greece police dismantle multiple fraud rings targeting elderly citizens

Greek police have dismantled several criminal organizations across the country targeting elderly citizens through sophisticated fraud and impersonation schemes.

In Thessaloniki, a 46-year-old man exploited a friendship with an 84-year-old woman to steal over 175,000 euros in cash, jewelry, and bank deposits. In Attica, two men were arrested for posing as electricity company employees to trick victims into hiding valuables in predetermined locations for theft.

Other major operations include the arrest of a gang in Pelas that used a ‘double trap’—first threatening a 90-year-old woman and then posing as police officers to facilitate the theft of 26,400 euros in assets. In Corinthia and Ilia, members of a gang posing as accountants or tax officials were apprehended after stealing more than 36,000 euros from elderly victims.

Additional arrests and investigations are ongoing in Heraklion, Phocis, and Giannitsa as authorities continue to track various groups specializing in telephone scams and organized theft of jewelry and cash.
