Crete health authorities monitor West Nile virus cases

Health authorities in Crete are on high alert following the confirmation of domestic West Nile virus cases on the island. A 69-year-old man from Heraklion is currently hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the University General Hospital of Heraklion, where he is intubated but in controlled condition.

Additionally, a 63-year-old woman remains in an intensive care unit in Rethymno. While her condition was previously critical, medical reports indicate she is responding well to treatment and is now considered out of danger.

In response to these cases, regional authorities have activated epidemiological protocols, including targeted mosquito spraying in affected villages. The Institute of Technological Research is also conducting systematic monitoring of high-risk areas for insect concentration. While the cases have drawn public attention, health experts urge calm, noting that these are sporadic incidents and emphasizing the importance of mosquito protection measures.
