Crete implements biosecurity measures and discusses regional autonomy
In Crete, authorities have extended preventive measures against disease to combat potential outbreaks. Although the island remains free of the disease, high transmissibility and environmental survival rates have prompted strict biosecurity protocols. These measures, effective from October 30 to November 12, 2026, include restrictions on the movement of sheep and goats, mandatory quarantine periods, and strict disinfection requirements for livestock transport and facilities.
Separately, Nikos Gialitakis, Deputy Mayor of Heraklion and member of the Committee of Local and Regional Authorities (KEDE), addressed the need for increased trust in local government. Speaking following the 51st Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in Strasbourg, Gialitakis highlighted the successful inclusion of island issues as a priority for the 2026–2031 period. He emphasized the necessity of infrastructure development and better management of tourism flows to support the island's future.
