Crete livestock disease prevention measures
Overview
The Region of Crete has implemented and extended preventive biosecurity measures to protect local livestock from goat and sheep plague. While the island remains free of the disease, authorities responded to rising cases in mainland Greece and the high transmissibility of the virus.
Initial restrictions, effective from October 16 to October 29, 2026, included limitations on animal movement for breeding, mandatory 21-day quarantines, and bans on importing goats and sheep from mainland Greece. Protocols also required the use of certified, disinfected vehicles and strict farm biosecurity, such as disinfectant footbaths. These measures were subsequently extended to cover the period from October 30 to November 12, 2026.
