Crete olive fruit fly control program enters third spraying phase
The Region of Crete is advancing its 2026 Collective Combat Program against the olive fruit fly to protect olive oil production and quality. The second round of general bait spraying is nearing completion across most of the island, with some areas in the final stages of application.
The third round of spraying has already begun in the northern zone of the Heraklion Regional Unit. Further expansions of this third round are expected in the coming days, depending on pest collection levels and weather conditions. The procurement of necessary insecticides is also underway.
However, certain areas will not receive scheduled sprayings due to a lack of successful bidders in previous tender processes. These include parts of Chania (including Souda, Apteroi, Tsikalarion, Aroni, Sternon, and Kounoupidianon), Agios Nikolaos (Vroucha, Skinia, Louma), and Ierapetra (Kalamafkas, Makrylia, Meselera). In these specific locations, olive growers are advised to manage pest control using their own resources.
