Voriza family crime ring in Crete busted for extortion and illegal EU subsidies

The Hellenic Police’s Organized Crime Unit launched a coordinated operation on 18 May 2026 in the Greek island of Crete, targeting a criminal group based in the Voriza district of Heraklion that had been active in the Amari area of Rethymno. Six suspects were detained – three on charges of extortion, arson and property damage, and three on livestock‑theft counts – all linked to a family network aged 39, 43 and 44.

Investigators found the gang used threats, vehicle arson, and destruction of vineyards and olive trees to force landowners to surrender or lease agricultural plots. The seized evidence showed false declarations of livestock holdings and farm units in the EU’s OSDE system, allowing the group to claim more than €580,000 in OPKEPE agricultural subsidies between 2021 and 2025. The fraud and related attacks caused estimated material losses of over €200,000 and affected dozens of local farmers.

The case underscores the misuse of European Union rural‑development funds and the presence of organized crime in rural Crete, prompting authorities to expand the probe across the island.
