Greek OPEKEPE scandal: trial dates, political clash

Overview

Mid‑May 2026 raids uncovered the OPKEPE subsidy fraud, sparking Operation Thresmos, more than 90 arrests and €2.5 million seized. In June‑July Crete‑based farmers and former officials were convicted. On 16 July the European Public Prosecutor’s Office indicted four New Democracy MPs—Kostas Skrekas, Christos Boukoros, Maximos Senetakis and Katerina Papakosta—on breach‑of‑trust offences; their immunity was lifted in April and a fast‑track trial was scheduled for November. The EPPO later cleared former MP Nótis Mitárakis, and New Democracy officials framed the case as minor misconduct (€7,200 loss) with no illegal enrichment.

PASOK parliamentarians, led by Evangelia Liakouli and Milena Apostolaki, reiterated on 21 July that the affair undermines institutional credibility and demanded a pre‑trial committee, full transparency and an end to political shielding. The next day the justice ministry confirmed the trial calendar: Papakosta on 2 Oct, Boukoros on 27 Oct, Senetakis on 30 Oct and Skrekas on 12 Nov, citing a new rule to speed such cases.

Government spokesperson Kostis Chatzidakis defended the reforms, noting the transfer of OPEKEPE to the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) and emphasizing thousands of audits and recoveries. He contrasted the four ND immunity cases (sums just over €10,000) with 89 cases involving opposition MPs since 2019.

As elections approach, parliamentary debate intensified. ND deputy Notis Mitarakis cited the EPPO’s confirmation of a citizen’s lawful request and rejected calls for an apology, while the government urged opposition parties to cease “scandalising” the public. SYRIZA framed the controversy as a test of integrity, accusing the ruling party of past corruption and positioning the issue at the centre of the pre‑electoral discourse.
