Crete police dismantle animal‑theft ring linked to EU subsidy fraud
On the morning of 27 July 2026, the Greek Police Organized Crime Unit (ΔΑΟΕ) carried out a coordinated raid across several municipalities of Crete, including Archan‑Asterousia and Agliani. The operation targeted a criminal organisation that specialised in systematic livestock theft, extortion of farmers, electricity theft and fraud involving European Union agricultural subsidies.
Eight people were detained – four core members aged 47, 34, 30 and 19, a 69‑year‑old, a 49‑year‑old, a 45‑year‑old and a 36‑year‑old woman – among them a forester accused of breach of duty. They face charges of animal theft, extortion, electricity theft, illegal weapons possession, false statements and animal cruelty. Investigators say the ring stole at least 182 sheep and goats and one beekeeping machine, causing damage estimated at over €120 000, and illegally obtained roughly €341 250 in EU agricultural subsidies.
All suspects have been transferred to the appropriate prosecutors for further legal proceedings.
