Greek crackdown intensifies with further drug busts

Entities: Rio · Kastrokampos · Haraki area · Greek Police Department for Combating Organised Crime (Crete) · Patras

Overview

The nationwide anti‑organized‑crime campaign in Greece continued through late July 2026. Building on earlier seizures, police in Larissa uncovered a large indoor cannabis farm on 23 July, seizing 538 mature plants across two plots of roughly 2,000 m² and 1,000 m², together with cultivation equipment and phones. Two foreign men, aged 26 and 69, were arrested.

On 25 July, Heraklion officers detained a 40‑year‑old suspect and recovered 58 g of cocaine hidden in a jar of rice, €2,680 in cash and related paraphernalia.

The following night, a specialised anti‑extortion unit – dubbed the “FBI” – executed surprise raids in the coastal towns of Rio, Kastrokampos and Kourouta (Achaia and Ilia). The operations targeted the “night war” of extortion, assaults on night‑club owners and bomb placements. Officers seized additional cocaine and cannabis, disrupted racketeering networks, and arrested several suspects linked to violent attacks and an attempted bombing.

These actions extend the multi‑agency effort that began in May, showing a sustained focus on dismantling drug supply chains, disrupting violent youth gangs and curbing organized crime across Greece.

Investigations remain ongoing, with authorities tracking broader networks and potential further incidents.
