Crete reports first domestic West Nile virus case in Rethymno
The first confirmed case of domestic West Nile virus transmission in Crete has been identified in Rethymno. A 63-year-old woman is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of Rethymno Hospital after presenting with neurological symptoms similar to meningitis.
Health authorities have emphasized the significance of this case because the patient had not traveled outside of Crete, indicating that the virus is circulating locally on the island. This follows a previous case in Crete involving a 75-year-old man, though that was classified as an imported case from Attica.
According to the latest weekly report from the National Public Health Organization (EODY) dated August 26, 2026, Greece has recorded 232 domestic West Nile virus infections and 19 deaths. Currently, 73 patients remain hospitalized, including 26 in intensive care units. The virus has been detected across 14 municipalities, and experts suggest that infection rates may peak in the coming days.
