Crete reports fourth West Nile virus case in urban Heraklion
A 34-year-old man from Nea Alikarnassos has been hospitalized at Heraklion University Hospital after testing positive for the West Nile virus. This marks the fourth locally acquired case in Crete this year. The patient has experienced complications involving the central nervous system, though he has not required intensive care due to his age and lack of underlying health conditions.
Health officials noted that this case is significant because it was identified within an urban area, whereas previous cases on the island were linked to rural locations such as wetlands. Antonis Papadakis, head of Public Health for the Region of Crete, stated that authorities are investigating the patient's workplace and the surrounding area to identify potential mosquito breeding sites.
In response, the region has initiated public health protocols, including mosquito spraying operations, the distribution of information leaflets to residents, and the potential deployment of mosquito traps to monitor local infection levels.
