Cricket Australia to stage Big Bash League opener in Chennai

Cricket Australia will hold the inaugural match of its Big Bash League (BBL) season in India, scheduling the game for December at Chennai's M.A. Chidambaram Stadium. The move is intended to tap into the world's largest cricket market, as IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said, "India is the biggest cricket market, so definitely Cricket Australia would want to capitalize on that."

Dhumal added that the BBL expansion aligns with cricket’s upcoming return to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028, offering a boost to the domestic tournament’s commercial and sporting profile. Officials expect the Indian venue to raise the league’s audience and revenue, reinforcing ties between Australian cricket and the global game.
