India deepens Indo‑Pacific ties and mineral cooperation

Entities: Quad · Narendra Modi · Australia · India · Philip Green

Overview

In early July 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Indo‑Pacific tour secured uranium agreements, defence‑innovation MoUs, a critical‑minerals corridor and trade targets of up to US$100 billion by 2030. A follow‑up summit in Melbourne expanded maritime‑security information sharing and reaffirmed the uranium pact.

Later that month India took part in the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila (19‑24 July). Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar attended the ASEAN‑India dialogue, the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN Regional Forum, underscoring India’s “very important role” in ASEAN’s 2026 theme of “Navigating Our Future Together.” The Manila gathering also hosted a Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting, with the United States, Australia, Japan and India issuing a joint declaration reaffirming a free and open Indo‑Pacific, ASEAN’s centrality and cooperation on maritime security, critical‑technology supply chains and humanitarian response.

On 21 July, ASEAN foreign ministers issued a joint statement urging an immediate cease‑fire in the renewed US‑Iran hostilities and calling for safe, unimpeded navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, citing risks to regional energy supplies and trade. The Quad ministers on the sidelines reiterated their commitment to a free Indo‑Pacific and to ASEAN’s central role.

On 24 July, Australia confirmed a long‑term agreement to export uranium to India for peaceful purposes under IAEA safeguards, reviving a 2014 civil‑nuclear cooperation treaty and supporting India’s expanding nuclear power programme under the SHANTI Act. These developments further cement India’s diplomatic and mineral‑supply links across the Indo‑Pacific region.
