Crime Stoppers programs face widespread suspension in Canada
Numerous Crime Stoppers programs and police services across Canada have suspended their partnerships with the organization following a major data breach. At least 11 programs have paused anonymous tip intake, and 24 police units have suspended their involvement.
The suspensions follow reports that a data hack in March compromised information from over 60 Canadian Crime Stoppers chapters, potentially exposing the names, phone numbers, and addresses of tipsters. Navigate360, the U.S.-based third-party company that manages international Crime Stoppers tips, recently confirmed the breach, marking its first public acknowledgment seven months after the incident.
Police services in Ontario and Manitoba, including the Winnipeg Police Service and the Brantford Police Service, have cited the need to protect public trust and ensure the confidentiality of individuals who come forward. The Port Hope Police Service also announced a temporary suspension as a precautionary measure while assessing risks to the privacy and anonymity of those providing information.
