Canadian Crime Stoppers data breach

A major cybersecurity breach involving the P3 Global Intel tip-management platform, managed by the U.S.-based company Navigate360, has exposed more than 1.5 million Canadian Crime Stoppers tips spanning 25 years. The data was stolen in March by the hacktivist collective Internet Yiff Machine, which aimed to challenge claims regarding the platform’s security and anonymity.

Investigations revealed that approximately 850,000 records contained personally identifiable information, such as addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, license plates, and some banking details. The leak includes sensitive allegations related to murder, terrorism, drug trafficking, and organized crime. Notably, over 4,300 tipsters identified themselves by full name.

In response to the breach, numerous Crime Stoppers programs and police services across Canada have suspended their partnerships with the organization. At least 11 programs have paused anonymous tip intake, and 24 police units have suspended involvement. Police services in Ontario and Manitoba, including the Winnipeg and Brantford Police Services, have cited the necessity of protecting public trust and ensuring the confidentiality of individuals providing information.
