Journalist César Candia targeted in vehicle arson attack in Paraguay

Journalist César Candia, a correspondent for SNT, C9N, and Albavisión in the Canindeyú Department of Paraguay, was targeted in an arson attack in Yasy Cañy. An unidentified hooded individual entered Candia’s residence and set his vehicle on fire, destroying the car and the journalist’s professional equipment.

Candia stated that he had received prior threats and suggested the attack was linked to his investigative reporting on local political figures, including a candidate for mayor in Yasy Cañy. The Public Ministry has launched an investigation into the incident, with prosecutor Néstor Narváez overseeing the collection of evidence at the scene.

The Sindicato de Periodistas del Paraguay (SPP) has officially repudiated the attack, expressing solidarity with Candia and his family. The union is calling on authorities to ensure the journalist's safety and is urging the National Congress to pass the Law for the Protection of Journalists and Human Rights Defenders to prevent future aggression and safeguard freedom of expression.
